"It is exciting to teach maths and to watch children begin to understand how to solve problems. There is such pleasure in watching children suddenly find something simple that once was complicated."
Mrs Roberts (KS1 Subject Leader)
“I love teaching maths, especially that moment when a child is struggling with an idea or concept, and then something suddenly clicks and it falls into place for them."
Mr Trendell (KS2 Subject Leader)
Curriculum Intent
Mathematics is an important creative discipline that helps us to understand and change the world. We want all pupils at Minety C of E Primary School to experience the beauty, power and enjoyment of mathematics and develop a sense of curiosity about the subject with a clear understanding.
We are committed to creating a positive, safe and nurturing Christian environment, where all members of the school community will be respected and valued and SHINE. By SHINE in Mathematics we mean children:
- Sparkle by becoming problem solvers, who can reason, think logically, work systematically and apply their knowledge of mathematics.
- Help themselves and each other in becoming more proficient mathematicians.
- Imagine the beauty of maths and how it impacts on the world around them
- Nurture positive attitudes, fascination and excitement of discovery through the learning of mathematical concepts.
- Excel by gaining a deep, long-term, secure understanding of maths.

Power Maths
At Minety Primary we use the Power Maths curriculum mastery programme designed to spark curiosity and excitement and nurture confidence in maths.
Power Maths provides an enriched approach that cleverly combines interactive teaching tools, rich and quality textbooks and practice books.
Built around a child‑centred lesson design that models and embeds a growth mindset approach to maths and focuses on helping all children to build a deep understanding of maths concepts.
Whole School Maths Investigations
At Minety we love investigating and going deeper. Each term the whole school take part in a maths investigations. In Term 1, we all carried out investigations into addition.
Times Table Rockstars
We believe that the learning of times tables is vital in helping children to become better mathematicians. One of the ways we encourage children to improve their recall and understanding of times tables is through Times Table Rockstars (TTRS) . We love TTRS at Minety school and you'll regularly see us taking part in 'Battles', whether they be Class vs Class, Boys vs Girls or us against other schools in the UK.
Mathletics
We use Mathletics both in the classroom and at home as a tool to support learning through fun interactive games, activities and challenges. Every child has access to this learning platform and is another tool we use to help continue to keep our children engaged in their maths.
KS2
KS2 have been making tinfoil boats to investigate why steel ships don’t sink.
